ABOUT

Roxanne McCann is a native of San Francisco, California.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  During her year abroad at the Stanford campus in Rome, she studied the History of Art in Italy.  She broadened her study of art to include photography after she was given her first camera by her husband, Austin McCann.

While working in the production of television commercials in Los Angeles, Roxanne McCann began taking production stills.  She had the good fortune to work for and learn from the award winning director/cameramen Jeff Lovinger, Steve Horn, Rick Levine, and  Joe Pytka. Academy-award winners in Cinematography, Haskell Wexler and Conrad Hall, employed McCann as a Producer for their commercial production company, Wexler-Hall, where she was able to observe first hand these masters at work.

The influence of McCann’s favorite period, the Renaissance, is evident in many of her images.  In the Ancestral Traditions photo essay, we see the dramatic chiaroscuro effect used by Caravaggio, combined with the captured moment of the sculptor Bernini.  The subjects are lit only by available light – a spotlight, fire, or a sunbeam, and at times emerge from the darkness like apparitions.  The images are printed by the artist using advanced darkroom techniques, and are limited edition gelatin silver prints.

The Visions of Hawai’I photo essay embraces the beauty of the Islands, be it a beautiful face, a spectacular vista, or a chameleon’s tiny world.  The color work leaves behind the gravitas of the black and white for a lighter feeling.  In this body of work she uses both film and digital.

McCann’s photographs are in private collections in Hawa’i’I, throughout the mainland United States, Europe, and South America.
